If you were to ask any Montrealer which is the most fantastic neighborhood in the city, a passionate debate would surely ensue. “The best vibe is in Verdun,” someone might say, referring to the popular neighborhood in southwestern Montreal. Another person might ask if you have heard of The Mile End and the Plateau.

Both suggestions would be correct. However, in a city as charming as Montreal, there are so many beautiful places that deciding which is the very best is almost impossible.
For more than one-hundred years, the artistic community in Montreal has made its home in the Saint-Louis Square area, where you will discover colorful buildings with staircases that are beautiful to behold. To the north, you will find poutine at La Banquise on Rachel, Portuguese-style grilled chicken at Romados, and amazing brunch at Le Petit Rustik on Duluth, as well as fantastic clubs and bars, such as Apt. 200 and Big in Japan located on Saint-Laurent. The Plateau is home to several of the best parks in Montreal, such as Mont-Royal (referred to as “the mountain” by locals), Laurier and La Fontaine, while Saint-Denis, Saint-Laurent and Mount Royal are the top streets for shopping.
The Mile End is technically in the same district as the Plateau and it has been compared to New York City’s Williamsburg neighborhood with its concentration of hipsters and Orthodox Jews. Two of Montreal’s most iconic bagel shops, Fairmount and St. Viateur, are found in The Mile End, along with the popular Café Olimpico, the Drawn & Quarterly bookstore, and many vintage shops.
Other neighborhoods to check out in Montreal include Verdun, Saint-Henri, Hochelaga, Little Italy, and Old Montreal.
