During “Welcome Week” in Canada, Ottawa was the venue for an emotional citizenship ceremony where more than 60 new citizens from 25 countries received their Canadian citizenship certificates. Among them was Raina Ahmed, her husband, and their five children, originally from Sudan, who completed a years-long process, achieving their goal of a safer and fuller life in Canada. “We came here for safety, for our children’s future, and to improve our careers as doctors,” Raina commented excitedly.
Another highlight was the moment for sisters Iris and Laris Nkunzimana, who finally celebrated their Canadian citizenship alongside their extended family after seven years. “The best moment was receiving my certificate and hearing others’ stories about how they got here,” said Laris, still emotional from the event.
The ceremony was led by Immigration Minister Marc Miller, who expressed pride in welcoming people who have left their countries in search of new opportunities. Citizenship judge Raina Sfeir also shared her experience as an immigrant from Lebanon, emphasizing that Canada has offered her everything she dreamed of.
New Canadian citizen Anderson Olivira Sousa, originally from Brazil, shared his story of how he came to study, fell in love with the country, and decided to stay, noting that he even found love in Canada, with his girlfriend Angela by his side at the ceremony.
